For the final game of the regular season, the Martin’s Spartans hosted the Caledonian Nationals at their Centennial Park Ward & Patch Sports Field.

The history of Ward & Patch Sports is as rich and amazing as Martin’s fruit grove meandering.

In the 1950s, two men named Al became buddies [what are the chances] and opened a much-needed store in the Jane and Bloor area, selling guns and golf equipment.

It had a rifle range in the basement and a golf driving range on the second floor.

[What could go wrong?]

After a couple horrible accidents on both floors, the store quickly rebranded, selling baseball and hockey gear.

The store finally closed in 2010, but the sign on the Centennial Park batting cage is a testament to both Al's sparing no expense on the durability of the advertising plaques.

It is also a time capsule of the last time the batting cage was cleaned.

Back to Balling with Bases…

This was a great back-and-forth contest which took the entire 7 innings to complete.

The shorthanded homies never gave up.

Behind outstanding hits from Lorenzo, Dante, Gavin, and Dimitri, the Whites came back twice to tie it up.

But with Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events in the last inning, the visitors took the lead and the game.

Final score: 7-10.

Awards of Distinction

Offense:

  • Lorenzo, Dante, Gavin, and Dimitri with doubles

  • Gianluca, 2 RBIs

  • Lorenzo, Gavin 2 hits each.

Defense:

  • Lorenzo and Lucas (an emergency waiver wire pickup): amazing catches in the outfield

  • Jake: double play at 2nd base

Pitching:

  • Lorenzo: 1 inning, zeroes across

With the regular season ending, the Whites will try to continue their luck at the TBA’s.

Next stop: playoffs…
